Svalbard Global Seed Vault to get its first deposit of 2021
Svalbard, Global Seed Vault, Genebanks, Africa, South Asia, Nordic Genetic Resource Centre, Norway, Crop Trust, Zambia, Mali
The Seed Vault was last opened for a deposit in October 2020. The decision to add watermelon, strawberry and pumpkin seeds also coincides with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)’s International Year of Fruits and Vegetables. The Svalbard Global Seed Vault has often been dubbed as the “doomsday” vault. It is a secure facility located inside a mountain on a remote island in the Svalbard archipelago. Svalbard is a geologically stable area where humidity levels are also low. The Seed Vault is located well above sea level and protected from flooding. Apart from artificial cooling systems, the permafrost also offers natural freezing, providing a cost-effective and fail-safe method to conserve seeds.
